CHAPTER TWELVE

Perry peered through the small opening he’d made between the curtain panels, watching diligently until Cora came into view.

“Here she is.”

Without a word, Arthur strode to the window and parted the curtains. He squinted at the Wolf on approach, made a noise of disgust, and then left the room.

Despite his room being on the same side of the hall, he didn’t have an equivalent view. A massive tree obstructed the full length of the sidewalk.

Perry had had a hunch that Arthur wouldn’t remain unbothered for long, especially since he’d spoken the truth about the nature of his interest in Cora. Saying things aloud had a way of intensifying certain sorts of magic. If he was feeling even remotely as anxious as Perry, he was likely itching to yank his hair out. Perry was thankful his hair was no longer long enough to get a good grip on.

Matt drifted to the door and locked it. “I’m ignoring any arguing I hear in the hall.”

“It’s four a.m. They’ll wake the entire hotel if they can’t control their volume.”

“Well, if they do go at it, they won’t bother to for very long. Cora will curve him and slam the door in his face, and he’ll shuffle to his room. If anyone wakes up, they won’t know why.”

“You seem confident in that.”

Matt shrugged and gave the neck of his T-shirt a tug of apparent discomfort. “I know Cora well, I guess.”

“Hmm.” Perry twirled a hotel pen between his fingers and gave his throat an unnecessary clearing. If there wasn’t going to be any more movement for the evening, sleeping arrangements would become an issue. Arthur may have been fine with staying up all night if necessary, but Perry needed sleep, and he suspected Matt did, too.

The problem was that Matt had abandoned his room. They were short one bed.

He didn’t want to look at Matt. Even in his periphery, he could tell the other man was aching to get out of his clothes. Matt always fidgeted a certain way late in the day—or early in the morning, as the case was—when too much fabric had been touching him for too many hours.

The fabric was lucky.

Perry swallowed thickly and resisted the urge to pinch sense into himself. “I…think I’ll send a message to Cora to ask if she spoke with Vlad again.”

“Good idea.” Matt stepped into the bathroom and closed the door behind him.

Perry let out the stale air he’d been holding in and tilted his head back. He closed his eyes and rocked his neck side to side, pondering how best to extricate himself from the dilemma.

I could always sleep on the floor and let Matt have the bed…

Raising his head, he grunted, convinced of the reasonableness of the idea.

While opening a text menu to Cora with one hand, he tossed a pillow and the top sheet to the floor near the window.

Did you run into Vlad?
